STEPHAN BALKENHOL

Stephan Balkenhol, 1957 Fritzlar, Deutschland.

Stephan Balkenhol, 1957 Fritzlar, Germany. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Hamburg from 1976 to 1982 where he was a student of the painter Sigmar Polke.

Balkenhol is one of the most internationally recognized contemporary German sculptors; His works are in such important institutions as the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Neue Pinakotek in Munich, the Art Institute in Chicago or the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

With the forms of the human being as the main focus, Balkenhol is one of the main exponents that reintroduces the human figure in Contemporary Art. His monumental sculptures of anonymous people are known, in polychrome wood, in color combinations that are timeless and at the same time eerily familiar. His technique for sculpting wood reveals all those imperfections typical of the tools he uses for his work: hammer, chisel and chainsaw; his sculptures retain the gaps, cracks and fissures that result from the sculpting process creating living figures that are permeated with the spontaneous expressiveness of the artist.

He has carried out numerous commissioned works that can be found in facilities such as the Blackfriars Bridge in London, at the entrance to the Hamburg Zoo, the Städelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt, among others.

He currently lives and works in Germany and France.

Stephan Balkenhol, 1957 Fritzlar, Alemania.
