Antoni Clavé wird am 5. April 1913 in Barcelona geboren.

Antoni Clavé was born in 1913, April, the 5th in Barcelona. In 1926 he started attending the evening courses at the School of Arts and Crafts "Llotja" with Felix Mestres, Josep Mongrell and Angel Ferrant. In 1927 with the help of Mongrell, Clavé enters an internship in painting; he is fascinated by the manual procedures of the work, specially with the materials and the mixing of colors. In 1932 Clavé leaves the evening courses and starts working at the Cinaes company producing the weekly placards for the cinemas. At the same time he works for a children's magazine designing the advertising boards. During the Spanish Civil War the is employed at the Republican Faction, then, when the war was over, he escaped to France. After being confined at the camp of Les Haras in Perpignan, Clavé moves to Paris where he works as a comic and book illustrator. Clave's style is influenced by Bonnard, Vuillard, Rouault and in a very special manner by Picasso -whom he met personally in 1944- melancholic scenes and homely, doll alike feminine figures, as well as children, clowns and harlequins. From 1946 onwards he develops several scenographies for ballet and theater in Paris, Munich, London and New York. And in the 50's he illustrates books. In 1954 Clavé quits his job as stage designer and illustrator and devoted himself entirely to his paintings and start visiting Spain again. His paintings become more abstract and mysterious; inspired by the structures in the walls and graffitis he uses pieces of newspapers and other materials in his works as a collage. In 1957 he makes his first carpets and from 1969 the painter starts creating sculptures: Clavé works with bas-reliefs, assemblages and primitive totem-alike sculptures in wood and modelled lead or with found objects. In 1965 Clavé moves to Southern France, near to St. Tropez. In the 70's his paintings become even more obscure, mainly black and he mixes techniques. At the beginning of the 80's he develops the serie "Homage à Picasso", followed by a serie inspired in the city of New York, which he visited in 1972 and 1989. After several exhibitions in museums and art-galleries in Zurich, Barcelona, Paris and Tokio there is a retrospective exhibition at the Pompidou Centre Musée d'Arts Moderne in Paris. In 1984 the Spanish pavilion at the Venice Biennale is dedicated to Clavé's art.
